Dutch Design

Dutch designers combine radical aesthetics with a strong social conscience, technological innovation with careful craftsmanship, experiment with pragmatism and analysis with determination. They are open and independent thinkers, conceptually strong with a structured way of working, informal and sober, practical and reliable. They combine a critical and individualist mentality with a willingness to collaborate and the ability to convince others.

Exhibition: Architecture & Public Space

The Architecture & Public Space exhibition showcases the work of 15 prominent Dutch architecture and design practices. In the context of China’s explosive urbanisation, the design of public space has become a highly topical issue. The quality of a city’s public space impacts directly on the quality of life of its citizens.

The Netherlands have a long-standing tradition in the design of public space, and play a leading role internationally with their careful and programmatic approach. The different design disciplines complement each other here: urban designers work closely together with architects, product designers, artists and landscape architects, and all of them interact with citizens, city governments and developers in the process of city making.

The projects presented in the exhibition illustrate the Dutch know-how and the quality of their sustainable development and urban design. All participating agencies have expressed their interest in collaborating with Chinese designers, city planners and developers in addressing the issues connected with rapid urban expansion.

Matchmaking

The matchmaking programme during SICIW provides Dutch companies with a stepping stone in the direction of establishing potential business matches and offers them opportunities for first initial contacts that can contribute to the development of a valuable connection in China.

The programme will be dynamic, with activities ranging from one-to-one conversations with potential clients, an information meeting about the Chinese market and its players, company visits, to network receptions in the Dutch Design Lounge. The best matches will be made between Dutch and Chinese companies in close collaboration with local partners.

Dutch Design WorkSpace

Dutch Design WorkSpace will be launched during the SICIW. DutchDFA has initiated this three-year support programme, in close collaboration with the Consular General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Shanghai Creative Industry Centre, FAR Architecture & Design Center and local partners. The programme will start immediately after the conclusion of the SICIW and will be established in Shanghai.

Dutch companies working within the fields of design, fashion and architecture will be offered support through this creative business incubator. Special assistance will be given to designers who aim to enter the Chinese market: the programme will accompany them in their first steps in this new and challenging environment. The programme will also support Chinese designers who are interested in developing a closer relationship with the Netherlands.

The official signing ceremony between the Chinese and Dutch partners will take place during SICIW.

Dutch Day 17 October

The special Dutch Day on 17 October starts off with the daylong Architecture & Public Space conference, in which Chinese and Dutch urban designers and architects will enter into a dialogue about the design of contemporary urban space: in a rapidly urbanizing and globalizing world, how can cities create a public environment that is economically, culturally and ecologically sustainable, and that provides a safe and open platform for the daily activities and interactions of their citizens?

The RedLight Fashion Amsterdam Show, presenting the work of talented young Dutch fashion designers, follows the conference, while the Digital Disco Dialogue party, which involves an interchange between Chinese and Dutch veejays and deejays, concludes the day.

Pecha Kucha Night Shanghai

The Japanese term 'Pecha Kucha' roughly translates as chit chat. A happy crossbreed between an elevator pitch and a slide show Pecha Kucha Night presents up to 12 participants who show 20 images of their work for 20 seconds each. They can also show a clip or video, as long as their presentation doesn't last longer than 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

The theme for this Pecha Kucha Night Shanghai is Public Space. We find it all around us and use it every day, but what does it really mean? What will it look like in the future? Has our behaviour in public space changed? And, as virtual public gains more importance every day, is the use of physical public space still relevant?

In this special edition of Pecha Kucha Night Shanghai, Dutch and Chinese designers, architects and other creative minds will engage in a visual dialogue about this topic. The presenters will share their stories, design ideas, adventures or ground-breaking inventions related to public space with the audience, following the internationally proven format of Pecha Kucha’s 20 images x 20 seconds!

Pecha Kucha Night was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture) in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Pecha Kucha Night Shanghai has been organized by FAR Architecture & Design Center Shanghai (www.far-china.net) since 2006.

Social Energy exhibition

Social Energy, Contemporary Communication Design From the Netherlands presents 11 prominent graphic designers and design agencies from the Netherlands. Since the Spring of 2008 the exhibition has travelled through China, from Chengdu to Beijing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, concluding its tour in Shanghai, where it will be on show between 10 and 24 October 2009, as part of the Dutch Design Works programme.

Social Energy showcases work by Karel Martens, Niessen & De Vries, Machine, Studio Dumbar, NLXL, Catalogtree, Lust, Irma Boom, Peter Bilak, Mevis & Van Deursen and Mooren & Van der Velden. The selection was made by Li Degeng, Jiang Hua, lecturers, and Wang Min, Dean at the Graphic Design faculty of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. The show is the result of two years of their research.

The show’s title reflects the curators’ view of Dutch graphic design as a powerful form of social production, which reflects the social concern of the individual designer as well as characteristics of Dutch society. What they find inspiring about these examples of Dutch graphic design is their function as conduits and impulses for social communication, for the exchange of ideas between citizens about a multitude of subjects, as opposed to advertising or propaganda.

The exhibition pays attention to the designers’ concepts and working methods. In addition to collecting posters, books and animations, the curators filmed the designers at work and interviewed them about their ideas and sources of inspiration. They even delved deep into the designer’ archives and selected sketches and rough designs, which are also part of the show.
